Year in Review — A Big Step Forward

2022 was a milestone year for sustainability regulation and impact measurement. The final text of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) has been adopted, and our frameworks have evolved to help organizations link impacts, value, and strategy.

We thank all partners, clients, and colleagues who contributed to pilot projects, publications, and discussions that shaped our work this year.

CSRD — The Final Text Adopted

The CSRD is now law. It will apply to approximately 50,000 EU companies, starting from the 2024 reporting cycle. The directive sets the foundation for data-driven sustainability management and makes “double materiality” a legal concept.

  • First reporting year: FY2024 for large entities already under NFRD.
  • FY2025 for other large undertakings.
  • FY2026 for listed SMEs (opt-out until 2028).

PI’s Impact Accounting, Value & Risk, and Strategy Frameworks are fully aligned to support CSRD implementation.

Impact Measurement Highlights

This year we helped several organizations quantify their positive and negative impacts in monetary terms. The results demonstrated that impact measurement can be integrated with existing financial analysis rather than stand apart from it.

  • Linking sustainability to risk & opportunity metrics.
  • Using context-based thresholds for climate, water, and biodiversity.
  • Aggregating impacts to visualize total contribution and “impact gap.”

Our updated method note and templates will be released in early 2023.

Outlook 2023 — Focus on Practical Implementation

The coming year will focus on practical tools and training for CSRD readiness. Our goal is to make impact data truly useful for management decisions and investor communication.

  • Regular workshops on materiality and data integration.
  • Case studies on linking impacts to financial effects.
  • Launch of our “Impact Academy” for sustainability professionals.

Stay tuned for the January newsletter with registration details.
